After a wonderful double début album “Get away from me” back in 2004 which was perfectly described as a “blend of Doris Day and Eminem”, Nellie McKay returns with another 2 CD set full of wonderful examples of her particular old-fashioned way to make music. “Pretty Little Head”  is full of (23!) small songs on such different themes as gay marriage and animal testing. On this set there are also two star collaborators namely Cyndi Lauper and K.D. Lang which all in all makes it a much nicer example of Nellie’s own style.

As a special gift to her fans for christmas Laura Pausini brings forth an album of covers of songs that have accompanied her on special moments of her life. She manages in her own passionate way to make them her own, as if they were only meant to be sung by her.  Two duets, one with well-known colombian singer Juanes and one with italian Tiziano Ferro, complete the selection. On the italian version of the album which you can buy as a pack for only 2 euros more there is even a duet with old french rocker Johnny Hallyday and you get to hear Laura singing in french too.

Guillermo del Toro presents us with the second part of a planned trilogy about Spanish civil war, the first being “El Espinazo del Diablo”  (The Devil’s Backbone).

This time we accompany Ofelia, a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother to meet her Adoptive father who is a cruel captain of the post war military posted in a rural Spain. The Film mixes the crude reality and brutality of the time, some scenes being quite explicit, with Ofelia’s marvelous fairy tale journey into her rightful realm inside Pan’s Labyrinth.

This is a Deluxe re-release of this 1997 sci-fi horror movie which now comes in a special packaging (quite like the first editions of all Star Trek series, also from Paramount) including the digitally remastered movie and an extra disc filled with extras, along with a special 16 page booklet. This is the opportunity of reviewing Event Horizon and be very frightened again with it’s images as well as with it’s scarying soundtrack composed in common by the late Michael Kamen and the already dissolved band Orbital.

Dover, Follow The City Lights

With their new album “Follow the City Lights” Dover surprised everyone.

When i first saw the video of “Let Me Out” on TV I couldn’t  recognize them at first, the performer reminded me of a renewed Toyah (British Pop siren of the 80’s), until i realized that it was spanish band Dover who have made a massive change in  style much more danceable and electronic than before. With this CD they may have lost some of their previous fans of their almost hard rock period, at least for this record, but they surely gained quite another few new ones because it is a consequent move from what they did before to what they do now.

After Andrea Echeverry with her self titled solo début and Hector Buitrago  with “Conector” completed their respective solo  Projects Atreciopelados return after 2001’s “Gozo Poderoso” with a new album “Oye” which is  a more rockier, less electronic style like in their 1996 “La Pipa de la Paz”. As always, this colombian band is being very true to their characteristic style, mixing alternative rock with traditional colombian rhythms, and being very critic taking on every subject from love, women exploitation, peace and a tribute to protest songs.

Abba, Arrival 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (CD + DVD)

This october marks the 30th anniversary of the first release of one of (many) of ABBA’s milestones in music.

Containing Huge hits as “Dancing Queen”,” Knowing Me, Knowing  You” or “Money, Money, Money”, this new edition of “Arrival” (if i’m not mistaken this is the 4th time this album is reissued on cd!) contains 6 bonus tracks, three of them being the english, spanish and swedish versions of “Fernando”, not originally included on Arrival but recorded during the Arrival recording sessions.

The DVD illustrates with various performances on TV and some promotional videos as well  as a photo gallery the making of this pop gem.
