Palais Royal! Directed, written and starred by Valérie Lemercier, with Catherine Deneuve and Lambert Wilson

Palais Royal! Is very much a straightforward parody of the life and death of Princess Diana of Wales, set in a different, francophone country and with slightly different point of view. Princess Armelle and Prince Arnaud are to become King and Queen after Prince’s Arnaud’s  father the king is killed in an accident. At first it is very difficult for them who lead a relatively normal life but with the help of former Queen Eugénia all is set for a successful reign, or is it?Palais Royal! A Prairie Home Companion is our last chance to see a new Robert Altman Film in Theaters because it has been released posthumously. This master of his art depicts The Last Show (as it is called here in Spain) of a radio station  broadcast and the breaking up of a longtime crew and their reactions to the cancelling of the show. The story is told mostly through the happenings  during the singers waiting for their performance of their songs.

A small village which seems to be suffering the 10 biblical plagues attracts former missionary turned to scientific Katherine Winter to investigate the events only to discover that they really have no natural explanation. The Antichrist in the form of a teenage girl also seems to be roaming the landscape, and after some rather violent special effect show-offs the story comes to an end with a surprise.

French director Michel Gondry, mostly known for having directed quite a few of the best musical video clips around, treats the public to a stunning trip through Stephan’s (Mexican beau Gale García Bernal) dreams. Stephan’s Mexican father dies and he returns to his mothers Paris to be near her and to start working in a creative job which turns out to be anything but that. He moves into his parents apartment and instantly falls in love with neighbour Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourgh). Stephan has some difficulty distinguishing between dream and reality and this leads to some very strange situations. Really worth having watched.

This is a very interesting and visually unique film on a novel by Sci-Fi author Phillip K. Dick, based mostly on his own experience with drugs in the seventies. The whole story has been filmed with real actors but later animated in the style of a comic achieving some great effects. In a close future a drug called Substance D and a secret police corps watches over drug users. Secret Policeman Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) is ordered to watch over a small group of suspects consisting of him and his friends. This turns out to be very weird!

Madonna, The Confessions Tour

Another CD + DVD set while we wait for new material of the queen of pop. Having attended Madonna’s Drowned World Tour back in 2001 which was a stunning visual experience, I got this one expecting no less. After seeing the DVD I didn’t have the same feeling of having seen a great show. Everything was perfect, and you see the big money spent to produce the show to perfection but it’s rather flat in comparison to previous tours. The music on this set offers no surprises and little variation to existing versions. No doubt Madonna fans will enjoy it but it’s not essential for your collection.
